Establishment of NIOS

The NIOS was earlier known as the National Open School which was established in order to cater the needs of the learners who are under the pre-degree level. It was established by the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) in 1979 as one among its project with various flexibilities. However, the project was later upgraded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of India in 1989 as NOS (National Open School).

In the July month of the year 2002, the Human Resource Development Ministry made some amendation by including nomenclature and promoted the NOS into NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling).

The NIOS was established in order to promote the open schooling in national and also in global level and to strengthen the distance education learning through the activities of Research & Development.
